Music Generation is Ireland’s National Music Education Programme with a mission to empower children and young people to realise their full potential through access, to and participation in, high quality performance music education.
Initiated by Music Network, Music Generation is co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Local Music Education Partnerships (LMEPs) in which Education and Training Board and Local Authorities play a lead role.
Music Generation was established to ensure that any young person across the country, no matter where they live or their background, can pursue a passion for performing music if they want to. There is a diverse range of genres offered including pop, rock, traditional, hip-hop, songwriting. Young musicians are not only encouraged to participate, create and perform but to find their own voice, develop skills in self-confidence and form lasting friendships.
Music Generation now reaches over 115,936 children and young people across 29 cities and counties in Ireland.

Developed by seasoned experts in dyslexia education, Sarah Mc Guire and Sarah Watchorn, MyWordPal is the first product within a suite of offerings aimed at transforming the way children learn sight words; words that constitute 50-70% of written text.
The 2 Sarahs, with 50+ years of combined teaching experience, specialise in instructing children with dyslexia.
As the creators of The Reading Academy, they have not only been instrumental in offering after-school reading classes using their own programme but have also trained numerous teachers in the approach of teaching children with dyslexia to read.
MyWordPal integrates the extensive expertise of the Sarahs with cutting-edge AI voice recognition technology to deliver a program that is finely tuned to the individual needs of each child, ensuring significantly more precise results. The National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA) is an independent charity dedicated to improving adult literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy in Ireland. Founded in 1980, NALA advocates for adult literacy as a human right and works to ensure that individuals with unmet literacy needs can fully participate in society. The agency’s activities include campaigning, lobbying, tutor training, developing teaching materials, and conducting research. NALA has been instrumental in placing literacy on the political agenda and securing funding for adult literacy services, benefiting approximately 40,000 adults enrolled in Education and Training Board courses across Ireland.
NALA operates as a registered charity with funding from SOLAS, the further education and training authority, and other sources such as government departments, state bodies, the EU, and the private sector. With a staff of 30 based in Dublin, the agency provides tutoring, online learning services, policy advocacy, and campaigns to raise awareness about adult literacy issues. NALA is governed by a board elected at its annual general meeting, which includes both students and adult education professionals. The agency’s patron is the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, reflecting its significant impact and commitment to advancing adult literacy nationwide.
The National Learning Network (NLN) offers a diverse range of courses tailored to individuals who have experienced setbacks due to accidents, mental health issues, illnesses, or disabilities. These courses, which are available in more than 50 locations throughout Ireland, are designed to build confidence and provide practical job-seeking skills. Some notable programs include Artlink for artistic development, Business Administration for acquiring business and digital skills, Catering with Barista Training, Performing Arts, Computer Programming and Game Design, and many more.
Each course provides industry-recognised certifications, such as QQI Levels 3, 4, and 5, enhancing employability or progression to further education. The college emphasises personalised learning, practical experience, and the development of both technical and soft skills. Students benefit from a supportive environment with tailored assistance, helping them to make realistic and informed decisions about their future careers and education paths.
The Reading Academy specialises in teaching struggling readers and children with dyslexia using the proven Orton Gillingham approach. Using a specialised programme written by two experts in the field of Dyslexia, The Reading Academy helps children develop essential decoding and reading fluency skills, starting with foundational phonemic awareness. Instruction is personalised, using a multisensory approach, with continuous monitoring of progress. Through their growing number of certified tutors, The Reading Academy offers both online and in-person classes.

The “Tackle Your Feelings” (TYF) campaign by Rugby Players Ireland, launched in 2016, aims to enhance mental well-being through resources focused on happiness, optimism, and resilience. Initially targeting students, professionals, and rugby players, TYF has expanded its reach with the award-winning TYF app, which significantly improves users’ mental well-being. The campaign, supported by diverse rugby player ambassadors, plans to establish its Schools Programme as the primary well-being curriculum in Irish secondary schools by 2024, using sports psychology principles to develop students’ coping strategies.
TYF has seen remarkable success, including the ‘Best App’ at the 2019 Spiders’ Awards and ‘Best Long-Term Campaign’ at the 2021 Awards for Excellence in Public Relations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, app usage increased by 49%, showing its adaptability and relevance. The campaign’s diverse ambassadors and innovative use of media, including social media and animations, have broadened its impact, making mental well-being a proactive conversation topic across various demographics and contributing to a global reach.
Teen-Turn is an organisation dedicated to rectifying the gender disparity in the technology sector by offering young women immersive internships and mentorship opportunities in STEM fields. Their mission revolves around empowering these individuals to pursue careers in technology by providing them with real-world exposure to STEM projects and environments. By offering hands-on experiences and guidance, Teen-Turn aims to inspire and support young women as they explore and develop their interests in STEM disciplines, fostering diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.
Central to Teen-Turn’s approach is the belief that early exposure and practical experience are essential for breaking down barriers and increasing diversity in the technology sector. Through partnerships with leading companies and organisations, Teen-Turn facilitates meaningful internship placements for young women, allowing them to acquire valuable skills, insights, and confidence in STEM fields. Moreover, Teen-Turn offers mentorship and support to assist participants in navigating their STEM career paths, providing them with guidance, advice, and networking opportunities to empower them to pursue their aspirations. Beyond individual impact, Teen-Turn advocates for systemic change within the technology industry, promoting gender equality and diversity through awareness-raising, partnerships, and showcasing the talents of young women in STEM, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable tech ecosystem for future generations.
The Together Academy is a transformative programme for young adults with Down Syndrome, was stemmed from the founder’s Therese Coveney background in the social care sector and the birth of her daughter, April, who has Down Syndrome. Motivated by a vision of providing meaningful training and employment opportunities, Therese established The Together Academy as a social enterprise. Through strategic partnerships, diverse funding avenues, and a dedicated team, the organisation has flourished, offering training programs and employment opportunities while challenging biases and promoting inclusion.
What started with a single programme in Wanderers Rugby Club (beside the Aviva Stadium) has now culminated in collaborations with organisations like Happy Out café showcase their commitment to creating impactful partnerships in their flagship store in the newly opened cafe beside Dún Laoghaire Baths.
Recognitions and awards underscore the positive impact The Together Academy has made within the Down Syndrome community and beyond, emphasising the importance of providing choice and opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Through collaborative efforts with entities like The Down Syndrome Centre and Down Syndrome Ireland, The Together Academy is actively advancing employment prospects and fostering inclusivity. Looking ahead, the organisation aims to deepen its engagement with the broader community and other organisations championing diversity and inclusion, recognising the collective strength in unity.
I spoke to the organiser of these courses Prof Tom Cooney who said “TU Dublin offers a range of entrepreneurship courses and resources targeted at helping people from disadvantaged backgrounds who are considering starting their own business. The various courses are targeted towards persons with disabilities, migrants, marginalised youth, and prisoners. The courses are provided online, classroom-based or through eLearning platforms depending on the nature of the course.
The courses for persons with disabilities and for migrants are both 12-week online courses, held every Wednesday for two hours, equipping participants with essential entrepreneurial skills and knowledge. Each session features a successful entrepreneur from that community and also an expert on a specific topic. The courses include access to business planning tools, the basics of starting a company, the support available to entrepreneurs and how to develop your idea further. All participants are also given a mentor who provides one-to-one guidance on the evaluation and development of the business idea.
The courses for marginalised youth and for prisoners are both classroom-based, and these vary in terms of the additional support and resources made available to them. A new feature of TU Dublin’s activity is the provision of eLearning courses which allows people to learn about starting a business by taking an online course consisting of 12 modules.

A celebration of apprenticeships, skills and careers to inspire young people from across the country, WorldSkills Ireland 2024 has been designed to raise the profile of skills and apprenticeship careers and opportunities for young people as they navigate future options following secondary education.
Collaborating with educational institutions, industry leaders, and government bodies, the three-day event in September, aims to elevate the perception and value of vocational education and skills training.
It will host live competitions, providing a platform for Ireland’s skilled youth to showcase their talent and compete at the highest level, interactive ‘try a skill’ areas, virtual reality demonstrations and inspirational talks from industry experts. There will also be an educators’ zone, careers’ zone and FET village ensuring students and parents visiting the show will be informed and educated on the many opportunities and diverse career routes available.
A Government and Industry led event, WorldSkills Ireland 2024 is taking place from the 25th – 27th September 2024 at the RDS, Simmonscourt.
Young Social Innovators (YSI) is an Irish organisation that empowers young people to tackle social issues and drive positive change in their communities. Established in 2001, YSI provides a platform for youth to develop innovative solutions to various societal challenges, ranging from environmental sustainability to mental health awareness. Through its diverse programs and initiatives, YSI cultivates a culture of social innovation and activism among Ireland’s youth.
Central to YSI’s mission is the belief in the potential of young people to effect meaningful change.
